Weekly news for 6.8.23

Dear Friends

Here’s this week’s news.

A little word

What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but do not have works?

James 2.14 (NRSV)

The reformer Martin Luther famously called the letter of James an epistle of straw. For the reformers in their time anything that suggested anything other than salvation by faith alone was problematic. But that would be a misreading of James. I think what he is saying is that faith that doesn’t change you isn’t really faith. ‘All words and no action’ is problematic. Faith truly encountered means we will never be the same again.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks for the times your faith has challenged you to think and act differently.
  • For those not able to join with us due to illness or infirmity.
  • For aid and development agencies fighting for justice for the marginalised.

If you are busy in the mornings, the Reflective evening service follows the same theme most weeks and is a lovely peaceful end to the day.
