Weekly news for 13.8.23

Dear Friends

Here’s this week’s news.

A little word

‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’                                                                                                                                         Jeremiah 29.11 (NIV)

I was struck the other day how relentlessly negative the news is at the moment. Wildfires and floods, migrant boats sinking, cities being bombed, and hostile rhetoric aimed at anyone we disapprove of. We need to remember that there are lots of beautiful things too, and wonderful acts of kindness every day. They may not be ‘newsworthy’, but they are what keep us going.

Jeremiah lived in pretty desperate times, but God’s message was one of hope. May you know the power of a life lived in hope, every day.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks for the hope God plants in each one of us and may we nurture it.
  • For a grown up and compassionate national conversation about refugees and migrants.
  • For our Cathedral, its staff and all those who visit it.

If you are busy in the mornings, the Reflective evening service follows the same theme most weeks and is a lovely peaceful end to the day.

In September we plan to re-start the Toddler Group on a Wednesday morning. More details will be given soon. If you are interested in helping have a word with Will or Lucy Gowers.

Free to a good home

Following a clear out of the vestry and other hidey-holes there is a collection of lost property and books at the back of church. Help yourself to anything you want. Donations (optional) can go in the collection box. It will be there for a couple of weeks before recycling/throwing.
