Weekly news for 10/05/2026

Dear friends,

A little word

“As you, Father are in me, and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me” (John 17:21)

Today is council election day in Sheffield.

Elections are by their very nature a time of division and disagreement.

Jesus calls us to overcome the division and disagreement. Not by thinking the same things, but by recognising that our differences are not what defines us. We are in God, and God is in us – individually and together.

Things to pray for

Give thanks for those who serve as our elected representatives
Pray for all those who help to facilitate our elections, and the candidates
Pray for those who are standing for election to our PCC on Sunday

Coming up

Archbishop Stephen’s Pilgrimage via Christ Church – 9th May

On Saturday, Archbishop Stephen will be visiting the diocese to undertake a short pilgrimage from St Paul’s Wordsworth Avenue to the Cathedral. As part of this, the Archbishop will call at Christ Church Pitsmoor for a short time of prayer.

I (Huw) am suggesting this will be done “Café style” – in that we’ll offer drinks to him and the other pilgrims at the start of a simple time of afternoon prayer.

If anyone wants to join with this, we’ll open at 2.00pm.

At about 2:30pm some of us could walk in the opposite direction to meet the pilgrim band.

Arrival, cuppa and prayer time will begin around 2:40pm.

Nominations at the Annual Meeting

We have a number of posts to elect this year:

  • 2 x Churchwardens
  • 2 x Deputy Churchwardens (please note this is the same form as church warden)
  • 2 x Deanery Synod reps
  • 8 x PCC members (this is the three for this year plus 5 unfilled from previous years).

Most nomination forms have now been received – if you want to stand and haven’t filled out an election form yet, please do before Sunday. They are at the back of church.

If you have any questions please email office@pitsmoor.church

Ascension Day Services

This coming Thursday is Ascension Day, one of the Church’s so-called ‘Red Letter Days’ (in other words, very important. The other ones include Christmas and Easter Day).

In addition to the usual 10.00 Communion Service there will be an additional service of Holy Communion for half-an-hour at 6.00pm.

Confirmations at Sheffield Cathedral

Confirmation is a part of the Church of England’s way of being a Christian. It’s the special church service in which a person confirms their baptism promises and commits their life to following Jesus Christ. The bishop then lays his or her hands on your head and ask God’s Holy Spirit to give you the strength and commitment to live God’s way for the rest of your life. It’s a great service – very moving and one you can invite others to, if you wish.

Condfirmation is preceded by a short series of meetings that prepare us for that service and the Christian commitment involved. They tend to be informal discussions and take about four sessions of one hour each.

We have the opportunity to join with the confirmation service at the Cathedral on 19th July.
