Weekly news for 8.2.26

Dear friends,

Here is the news for this week.

A little word

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures for ever. Psalm 136.1 (NIV)

We live in a time where everything feels short term and has to be instant. Long term planning doesn’t seem to happen. It is the age of the sound bite and the social media post.

Psalm 136 gives a different perspective. There are another 25 verses each with the response, His love endures for ever. It is a reminder of the permanence of God and God’s love being eternal. Try thinking of some things to thank God for, memories, remembrances, blessings simple pleasures, and remember that in our temporary society there are things of value that endure.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks for all those reminders of God’s goodness.
  • For those who are navigating the Asylum system, for justice, fairness and humanity.
  • For ongoing persecution of minorities around the world, whether religious, political, racial or ethnic.

This Week’s Headlines

Lent

Lent will soon be upon us. We start with a service of Holy Communion on Ash Wednesday, 18 Feb, at 7pm. This year our Lent groups will meet in the week (details shortly). We will be thinking about The Tree of Life.

With grateful thanks

Some of you will remember Michael Tomkeieff who died five years ago. Michael left us some money in his will and I am pleased and rather humbled to report that we have received £100,000! The PCC will be thinking about how we might use this amazing gift.

Diocesan Safeguarding Audit

The Diocese takes safeguarding seriously and part of that is to invite an independent body to conduct an audit. Anyone can contribute to the surveys so that the auditors can get as full a picture as possible prior to their visit. We are committed to hearing the truth and changing in the light of that.

Details for both the surveys and for contacting the audit team are available through the INEQE website here: ineqe.com/churchofengland/sheffield. The surveys are now live and will close at 11.30pm on Wednesday 11 March 2026.

If you have difficulty accessing online and have something to offer talk to Nick or Pip so that we can help you.
