Weekly news for 11 Jan 2026

Dear friends,

Happy new year on this first newsletter of 2026.

A little word

a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. Isaiah 42.3 (NRSV)

Epiphany means ‘to appear’. It is all about revelation, understanding and insight. There has been a lot of talk this week regarding the news, about whether we are returning to an era of might is right. I thought it fascinating that in one of the readings set for this week come these words of Isaiah. He is looking forward to the the Messiah. Isaiah’s revelation about the Messiah is that he is the polar opposite of ‘might is right’! Even in the bent reed or dying flame he sees potential, dare we say hope. Where we talk of efficiency, tidying up, and things (or people) being non viable or surplus, Jesus sees an opportunity for justice to shine. May it be so.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks for those who work for justice.
  • For world leaders, that they might be guided by justice and integrity.
  • For those the world regards as not worthy.
