Dear Friends,
We are now meeting in the Welcome Centre for everything as the Church refurbishment continues.
A little word
If anyone causes one of these little ones—those who believe in me—to stumble, it would be better for them to have a large millstone hung around their neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea. Matthew 18.6 (NIV)
You will be very aware that Safeguarding in the Church (and it’s failure) has been headline news this week. The Archbishop of Canterbury has resigned and it is promised that lessons will be learnt. It is worth saying that procedures and practises have moved on significantly from where they were at the time the recent report is referring to, but we can never be complacent. As a church we weep with those who have been hurt, hold people to account, and recommit ourselves to do everything in our power to ensure this sort of thing cannot happen again. It is everyone’s responsibility to look out for each other and make our own space a safe place. If you need to talk or raise concerns speak to Nick our Safeguarding Officer or to Pip.
Things to pray for
- For the victims of abuse and betrayal at the hands of the Church.
- For our senior leaders and the huge burden of responsibility they have to carry.
- For the PCC meeting on Monday.

This Week’s Headlines
Current Bishop of Doncaster, Sophie Jelley, to become next Bishop of Coventry
The Bishop of Doncaster, the Rt Revd Sophie Jelley, has been officially announced as the next Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of Coventry. Bishop Sophie said:
“Reflecting on nearly five years in Sheffield Diocese, I am deeply grateful for the support and warmth of this community, especially through the challenges of the pandemic. Starting episcopal ministry behind a screen was far from ideal, yet your generosity quickly made Sheffield feel like home. It will be a big wrench to leave Sheffield, but I am confident that in accepting this new role, I am following God’s call. Serving as Sponsoring Bishop and Chair of the Board of Education has been a real privilege. As I prepare to move on to Coventry Diocese, I will take so many of the lessons learned here with me and I know that it will be a great honour to serve the people there, with its rich diversity and opportunities. The move won’t begin until next year and for now I would greatly value your prayers and assure you of mine, as Sheffield Diocese continues its strategic growth and outreach.”

Closure of Church for renovations
There is now no access to the Church. The Welcome Centre remains in use and as well as the usual weekday activities we will be meeting ‘upstairs’ on Sundays. If you are going to have access issues with the slope please talk to us, the lift remains in operation and we will do our best to work out a way to get you safely in the building.
The main roof is now painted and some of the new lights are in. The scaffolding is reduced so you can begin to get an idea of how it will look, which will be fantastic.
