Weekly news for 13.10.24

Dear Friends,

We are now meeting in the Welcome Centre for everything as the Church refurbishment gets underway. Don’t forget the grounds workday on this Saturday.

A little word

In the past God spoke… at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son Hebrews 1.1-2 (NIV)

For the next few Sundays our readings and talk will focus on the letter to the Hebrews. You might be familiar with bits. The opening lines above are often used at Christmas services. The author of the letter is unknown. It appears to be written before AD70 as it refers frequently to the temple as if it is still there. (the Romans destroyed in that year). The author is clearly steeped in Jewish law and practice and seeks to persaude their readers as to why Jesus is superior to everything before. I have a little commentary on Hebrews called ‘from shadow to reality.’ It helps us see how so much of the Old Testament gave us glimpses of God (the shadow) but in Jesus we see the reality. Like the transition from black and white to Technicolour. I hope you enjoy it.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks for all those who have helped us see God, in Jesus.
  • For communities in Florida and other places suffering the consequences of extreme weather events.
  • For all the agencies working in prisons and with ex-offenders.

Closure of Church for renovations

There is now no access to the Church. The Welcome Centre remains in use and as well as the usual weekday activities we will be meeting ‘upstairs’ on Sundays. If you are going to have access issues with the slope please talk to us, the lift remains in operation and we will do our best to work out a way to get you safely in the building. Inevitably there will be one or two teething issues to sort out so please let us know how it is going, and lets all pull together.
