Weekly news for 25.8.24

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone enjoys the Bank Holiday weekend. Here is the update for this week.

A little word

My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart you, God, will not despise.  Psalm 51.17 (NIV)

In morning prayer this week we read the dreadful account of King David and how he conspired to commit adultery and when his cover up failed, murder. It is remarkable that this humiliating failure is recorded so starkly. Psalm 51 is recorded as David’s response to the guilt of being found out. It reminds us of how the mighty can fall; of how all of us mess up; but also of how none of us are beyond God’s forgiveness. As Ezekiel puts it (36.26) God will replace our stone hearts with flesh and place his Spirit within us. ‘You shall be my people, and I will be your God.’

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks that we can be entirely honest before God and still be reassured of God’s love.
  • For a genuine search for peace in the Middle East.
  • For Christians persecuted for their faith and all prisoners of conscience..

Now the schools have broken up, we are in our Summer series. Instead of a ‘sermon’ we will have an interview, where we get to know better some of the faces we see at the front, and learn a bit of their story and what motivates them. I hope you enjoy it.

This week is David Smith, our organist.
