Weekly news for 28.7.24

Dear Friends,

Here is the update for this week.

A little word

Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister, Mary, and Lazarus. John 11.5 (NIV)

The gospels describe how Mary, Martha and their brother Lazarus gave Jesus hospitality in their home at Bethany outside Jerusalem. This coming week they are remembered in the church calendar. After Lazarus’s death, Jesus wept and was moved by the sisters’ grief: he brought Lazarus back from the dead that the glory of God might be shown. Martha recognized Jesus as the Messiah, while Mary anointed his feet and, on another occasion, was commended by Jesus for her attentiveness to his teaching while Martha served. From this, Mary is traditionally taken to be an example of the contemplative spiritual life and Martha an example of the active spiritual life. Lazarus, interestingly, like Joseph the carpenter, never has a single word attributed to him in the gospels.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks that we are all different, express our faith in different ways, and are all loved by Jesus.
  • For those tackling the symptoms and causes of poverty.
  • For our fundraising and the logistics as we work to get the project started in the Autumn.
