News update for 22.1.23

Dear Friends

Here is this week’s update.

A little word

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.                                                                       Ephesians 4.2-3

I must admit I’ve only just realised that this is the week of prayer for Christian unity. You will no doubt have heard some of the leaks of what proposals are likely to come forward following the meetings of the house of Bishops. The official announcement is tomorrow (Friday) so then we will have a fuller picture of what is coming to General Synod in February.

Whether what has been reported is accurate I do not know. One thing I do know is that it will be impossible to please everyone. Traditionalist and revisionist positions are never going to meet. But I take the call to unity very seriously. I am never going to agree 100% with everyone else but that doesn’t mean I no longer call them family. At a local church level, nationally and internationally we will have to agree to disagree on some of this. But I hope and pray that we can find a way to maintain our sense of unity.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks that God calls us to unity not uniformity.
  • For our PCC as they meet. For each person in a leadership role.
  • For the work of aid agencies, bringing hope to struggling communities.
