Weekly news for 13.7.25

Dear friends,

Here is this week’s news. We continue our series in Philippians reflecting on Joyful Discipleship. Do drop in at the Abbeyfield Festival on Sunday afternoon.

A little word

The Lord watches over the foreigner and sustains the fatherless and the widow, but he frustrates the ways of the wicked.  Psalm 146.9 (NIV)

As the French president comes on a state visit, the issue of migration and boat crossings jumps up our news headlines and fuels grand standing but rarely constructive conversation. Whilst acknowledging that this is a complex issue, the ‘othering’ of folk is rarely helpful. For every person taking their chances and fabricating stories there are dozens and dozens with genuine reasons who need help and compassion. We should be proud that our city tries its best to speak a different narrative.

With the trial concluding this week over the murder of Chris Marriott in our own community, it has been heart-warming to hear again of his selflessness as a follower of Jesus. We continue to pray for his family and all the others caught up in the events that tragic day.

Things to pray for

  • Give thanks for the love of God, experienced in even the most difficult times.
  • For a greater compassion towards those in need.
  • For the General Synod as they meet; for wisdom in decision making, and a renewed sense of unity.
